THAI May Beat SAGD for Oil Sands Extraction (pdf 44k)

Air injection is officially underway at the first ever field pilot of a technology that proponents say could replace steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) as the production method of choice for unconventional oil in situ. However, although toe to heel air injection (THAI) could hold great promise for the future of Alberta’s oilsands, if successful its potential applications could stretch far beyond the borders of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB).

    Sirs:
Will the THAI process be applicable to the Oil Shale reserves stretching from western Minnesota to western Montana? Would the process help to further refine the Kerogen which is in these reserves and needs further high temperature refinement to be a “light sweet crude”?

Is the burned out matrix left behind by the process adequate to support the weight of the geology above, or will some kind of reclamation process be required?
