Electric Cars: Mercedes Joins the Parade
Reuters reports that Mercedes will bring two electric vehicles to market in very small volume, obviously on a test basis, in 2010. That’s good news because it adds validation to the direction of vehicle development toward electrics, which is a basic step the world must take to cope with peak oil.
Of even more interest is the report that Mercedes is working - or at least talking to - Shai Agassi, the force behind A Better Place, the company that has contracted with Israel and Denmark to convert both countries to electric vehicles on a crash basis over the next ten years and to integrate renewable sources of electricity into the plan. That is spot on what needs to be done all over the developed world and eventually everywhere. In my humble opinion, of course.

Daimler to offer electric Mercedes in 2010: report
Fri Jun 20, 2008 3:49pm EDT
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Daimler plans to roll out a Mercedes-Benz model that runs on electricity in 2010, its chief executive said in a newspaper interview.
“We plan an electric Smart for 2010 and for the same year a Mercedes (electric) model as well,” Dieter Zetsche told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in comments to be published in the Saturday edition.
Daimler currently has in London a fleet of 100 first-generation Smart cars that run on electricity.
Unlike General Motors Corp, which has promised to launch a Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric car in 2010 selling for about $30,000, Zetsche said no decision has been made regarding the price for the electric models.
“That depends on whether we sell the batteries with the car or lease them. The willingness (on the part of consumers) to pay more is limited,” he said, adding that the group is also considering whether to manufacture electric motors itself.
Daimler, which spends about half of its research and development budget on powertrains and CO2 reduction, is also in talks with ex-SAP executive Shai Agassi regarding his plan to create a mass-market infrastructure for electric cars.
Zetsche also said he aimed to bring a small series of fuel cell cars to the market in 2010.
Earlier this week, Honda kicked off production of its FCX Clarity fuel cell sedan, which will be leased in the United States via a special dealership network starting in July and then in autumn in Japan.

I can’t help thinking copper is going to become a very good bet. We still need copper and magnets for electric motors don’t we?
Also I saw my first electric scooter go past yesterday. Its kind of freaky to see things go past making no noise. Esp. a scooter somehow since they are usually pretty noisy. I’ve seen the toyota hybrids take off. They also make very liitle noise but then we’re used to a modern sedan being fairly quiet.
Just imagine walking along a busy sidewalk and there being no traffic noise….
I bet some nitwit heads will want electric cars to make make beeping noises so you can hear them coming.
I’m in favor of automatic sensors that will cause a car to brake if it detects a collision possibility.

Simon, I agree, particularly about copper.
